MA Clinical Practicum
January 2006 through September 2006
Our Practicum meetings will be held, on the third Wednesday of every month for nine (9) months beginning Wednesday, January 25, 2006. The meetings will be held in my office at the Downtown campus, room T-1250 at 12 Noon promptly. Each meeting will last two hours. The instructor reserves the rights to make changes in the schedule if needed.
General
The objectives of the MA practicum are to provide students an opportunity to (a) discuss broad psychological issues that emerge from their clinical work, (b) to explore selected topics, (c) to consult the relevant literature, and (d) to learn and practice how to present clinical cases. Students will be required to write selected cases from their field practicum and present them in class. These presentations will involve discussions — in class — with an emphasis on issues related to the presented cases. Students will also discuss their own experiences as novice therapists.
Assignments & Responsibilities
Students are expected to attend all nine (9) meetings, to be punctual, and to stay in class for the duration of the meetings. Missing two (2) or more classes will require additional work (or attendance) and a temporary grade of In Progress (IP) will be given. The success of the learning experience depends on mutual learning where students share each other's experiences. Therefore, students are expected to engage in mutual conversation and sharing of clinical experiences.
In every meeting there will be two students' giving presentations of their cases. Each student must be prepared to present at least four (4) cases during the practicum. Students are also required to read the literature that will be assigned for the class discussion. The reading assignments will be given by the instructor in reference to the issues raised in the class discussions.
Students are required to fill all the forms needed for tracking their clinical work and hand them to me in the first week of the month. Direct contact hours must constitute at lease a third of their total practicum hours. Student will also need to submit, at the appropriate time, their own site evaluation and their supervisor's evaluation.
At the end of the practicum students are required to present a final paper, summarizing practicum experiences. The instructor will provide the details concerning the paper, its length and content, separately.
